Melanie is an excellent flute teacher. Thorough, clear and patient, she is also supportive and understanding. In my first year studying with her I achieved Distinction at Grade 5 and I am now about to do Grade 8. She is a wonderful accompanist and I’ve also enjoyed playing in flute groups under her supervision. Our shared love of Baroque music has also been a big bonus and source of inspiration.

Melanie McWililams has been giving piano lessons to my two teenaged children for over five years. Her love and understanding of music plus her attention to detail and technical expertise is clear throughout and both children have achieved strong results and are working to Grade 7 and 8 at present, Melanie also encourages a wide range of practice and has introduced contemporary jazz and pop music to their repertoire.

We have known Mrs McWilliams for over three years since she took on our daughter for lessons in flute and singing. As a music teacher she has been inspirational, enabling our daughter to progress from being a virtual beginner to becoming a confident and successful Grade 5 performer. Thanks to Mrs McWilliams, our daughter is now a member of Exeter Cathedral School Orchestra, Senior Wind Ensemble and Big Band. Mrs McWilliams also prepared our daughter for the audition to become a member of Exeter Cathedral Choir. It was largely thanks to the careful preparation and positive encouragement from Mrs McWilliams that our daughter was offered a place in the Cathedral Choir. There is no doubt that Mrs McWilliams is a brilliant music teacher. She also possesses the type of qualities that enable her students to make accelerated progress in their music studies and fully supports all of her students through the structured process of achieving grades, as well as learning the theory of music and building the all- important “love of music”. Mrs McWilliams possesses all of the qualities which make a successful Music teacher. We asked our daughter what it was about Mrs. Mc Williams she found such an inspiration and she replied “Well, she doesn’t just say “Very good,” she tells me how to be.” Mrs McWilliams is also a caring and supportive individual who will be firm and clear in her expectations and also takes time to invest in her relationship with the child, so that lessons become a source of pleasure and satisfaction, as well as learning.

Mel is fab-u-lous. She is a knowledgeable, expert and intuitive teacher. I am an adult learner with significant caring responsibilities. My flute lessons have been an incredibly important oasis. Mel has been so flexible around my caring crises when I turn up saying “I haven’t been able to practice”. I am now studying for my grade 8 without any pressure or anxiety. A true gem of a teacher.

am in my 70s. I took piano lessons while at school, mainly working towards exams and getting very little pleasure from it. A few years ago, after spending many years listening with envy to two of my children playing the piano beautifully, I took up lessons again. Although I am rather nervous in the lesson, making quite a few mistakes, Melanie is very understanding and encouraging, with the result that I leave each lesson looking forward to the task of improving the pieces I am learning, and putting into practice all that Melanie has told and shown me in the lesson, with the pieces tailored to my likes and ability. There are times when Melanie gives me a piece which seems at first to be very challenging. But with patience on both sides and her ability to show me how to initially work on it broken up into parts, I feel a sense of achievement and, important in one's 70s, my mind is kept active.
