Finnish-Cypriot vocalist and dancer, Andria Antoniou is a recent graduate of the Master in Jazz Performance course (Vocal) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Some of the most significant figures in her education during her postgraduate studies were Brigitte Beraha, Lee Gibson, Ian Shaw, Scott Stroman, Martin Hathaway and Malcolm Edmonstone. Andria also holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours at City of London University.
Moreover Andria is a qualified Latin American dancer and teacher (Imperial Society of Teacher of Dancing). Andria began her dance training in London under the tutelage of the Strictly Come dancer Andrew Cuerden. As a performer and teacher she often combines her passion of music and dance in a natural way, with one style of art feeding the other.
Andria grew up in a musical family. Her sister, a classical singer and music teacher, and her brother, a Flamenco guitarist. Both have influenced her musical education from the age of 6 to a great level. She believes that an inspiring life - full of exploration of our inner world and of people’s feelings and experiences - provides us with a great palette of colours with which an artist of any kind can create something ‘original’. Improvisation plays a key role in most of her activities as a performer. She integrates improvisational activities in her teaching in order to help her students find their own creative voice. As a singing teacher she emphasises the importance of developing a strong technique in order to maintain a healthy sound. Studying a repertoire in a wide range of styles (jazz, latin, soul, blues, pop and songs from musicals) while achieving the appropriate timbral quality (sound quality) for each style (including pronunciation in different languages), are another important part of her teaching. Learning music, dance and how to confidently perform should always be a thrilling and exciting process. Andria’s aim is to keep the excitement of learning always ‘alive’!
