Mr Joshua Ballance

Joshua Ballance started studying the cello aged 6 in the String Training Programme of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior Department. His teachers have included Gillian Thoday and Tim Lowe. Last year he performed Elgarís Cello Concerto in St Johnís Smith Square, and over the summer Faureís Elegie with the LSSO on tour in Spain. He also has a passion for chamber music, shaped by opportunities at Pro Corda and at his secondary school, Westminster, a string quartet from which has been invited to play in the final of the National Chamber Music Festival for Schools for two successive years. He currently holds an Instrumental Award from his university. Joshua was awarded the diploma ATCL with distinction aged sixteen, and he plays on an English cello c. 1770, attributed to Robert Thompson.
He has a particular passion for contemporary music, which has led him towards composition, studying with Dr Sinan Savaskan, and Dr Christian Mason, and now with Julian Anderson. He has been commissioned by the Octandre Ensemble, and recently the Novaura Choir. He spent a year as a composer with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and this summer he will be attending the Darmstadt International Course for New Music. He has also developed an interest in conducting, which began with the student conducting programme of the LSSO, before going on to study with Roland Melia. He has been involved in several masterclasses, recently with Nicholas Cleobury and Andrew Gourlay, and conducted Monteverdiís Orfeo in Peterhouse College, Cambridge in June. Joshua studies music at Kingís College, Cambridge, and ultimately hopes to forge a career as a professional musician.
