Having initially trained as a cellist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, my first love is ensemble playing and the classical world is my first home, although I have since developed a real appreciation of many genres and have enjoyed adding guitar and saxophone to my playing experience.

I have played cello in local orchestras around Suffolk for the past 25 years and I very much encourage my pupils to engage in ensemble work of some sort and play with them every lesson. Even scales can become interesting as duos! Sight reading skills (often dreaded in exam situations) and performing confidence can be developed much more quickly in ensemble settings in my experience.

Lessons need to be enjoyable for progress to be made; where there is pleasure, anything can be achieved. My husband once commented on the amount of laughter he hears in lessons at home; that comment made me very happy!

My formal teaching profession and experience as a Head of Music for many years has fed into my private tuition and I have developed a love of composition, encouraging pupils to compose duos for us to play.

I regularly lead residential and day workshops in a multitude of styles and genres with exciting performances for parents and friends at the end. I love this improvisatory way of working and pupils get a huge buzz from working 'on the hoof' as they improvise and collaborate to develop the initial material or stimulus they are given. Working free of the printed score can be liberating as eye contact and communication in performance between players is enhanced to create a unique energy that both players and audience experience.

Music Technology became a particular specialism in school and I contribute regularly to online teaching forums encouraging colleagues nationwide and I lead CPD for teaching colleagues.

I am a member of the professional musicians' association Music Mark, the association of community music Sound Sense, and I hold a current DBS safeguarding certificate for your reassurance.

Choral direction has become a real joy to me, having sung in choirs most of my life. There is something very special about the shared experience of singing with others that deeply touches the soul.

I now freelance as a private tutor, advisor and workshop leader. Music gives me great joy and I love nurturing others as they grow into musicians too.

I would love to hear from you, whatever your age, if you would like to start learning the cello or just need a few lessons to achieve a particular goal. I equally enjoy teaching children and adults and am available during the day.

If you are interested in any professional development or composition workshops for your community group or school, or would like some advice on how to incorporate Music Technology on a budget, please do get in touch.
