Biography

UK-based irishman Riley Stone-Lonergan has been building a strong reputation as a tenor saxophonist on the UK jazz scene since moving to Leeds to study at Leeds College of Music in 2008. Riley gained a BA in Jazz Performance, graduating with first class honours and winning several awards, including the Dave Cooper Memorial Prize for Jazz Saxophone, the John Scheerer Prize for Woodwind and the David Hoult Prize for Outstanding Performance. Riley was chosen as one of the 6 Yamaha Jazz Scholars, an annual award given out to the best young musicians graduating from music college.

Riley joined NYJO in early 2012 and has performed with the band in numerous high-profile gigs including the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall and London Jazz Festival and features on their 2012 album The Change.

Alongside his work with NYJO, Riley also works as a sideman in a number of large and small groups across the country. His quartet was featured on Acid Jazz’s Mo Jazz 2 in 2013, performing an original composition of his.

Most recently, Riley travelled to New York City for an extended stay to record original material for an upcoming album with sextet LOCUS. He also studied with internationally renowned saxophonists Seamus Blake, Chris Cheek and Joel Frahm.
