Lily Hughes (previously Webster) began studying the piano at the age of six with John Coath. She then became a chorister and music scholar at Exeter Cathedral School in 1994 before gaining a full scholarship to study the piano at Wells Cathedral School at the age of thirteen. Alongside her piano studies Lily also studied the recorder and gained a distinction in her ABRSM grade eight exam. After achieving a distinction in her piano ABRSM Performance Diploma she went on to gain a scholarship to study piano performance with Michael Young at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She was a winner of the EPTA UK competition in 2006 which gave her the opportunity of giving a piano recital in St Martin in the Fields. In 2007 she was highly commended in the RWCMD Concerto Trials which led her to give three concerts playing Manuel De Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain with Torbay Symphony Orchestra in the South West and also performed the work with Exeter University Orchestra. Since winning the Concerto trials in 2008 Lily played Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 in St David’s Hall, Cardiff and has performed it with Exeter Symphony Orchestra. Lily graduated from the RWCMD in 2008 gaining a first in her final recital, completing her ABRSM teaching diploma and winning the College Piano prize - The Phillipa Whitelaw Yardley Memorial Award. She completed a post graduate Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2009, where she performed as part of the Haydn Festival. Lily has enjoyed numerous master classes with various pianists, including Norma Fisher, Christopher Elton, Dina Parakhina, Leon McCawley and Bernard Roberts. Alongside her performing, Lily has a busy music practice in Bath, and is a piano teacher at Wells Cathedral School.
