My name is Mariya Sotirova and I am a professional viola player with experience in violin, viola and music theory teaching with particular expertise in classical music. My experience in music education has been focused on individual work, group coaching and performance workshops. I believe that I will be able to develop the musicianship of the students, and inspire them in their performing.
My educational background includes attending “Dobrin Petkov” Special Music School in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. After graduating from “Pancho Vledigerov” State Music Academy in Sofia, I won a scholarship to study with Jack Glickman at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London), where I also completed my Masters Degree. For the finale two years I was awarded the prestigious Artist Fellowship at the Guildhall school, organising various projects and chamber music concerts and being involved in the Junior Guildhall. As a member of Southbank Sinfonia (London) I have been involved in Pedagogical concerts and workshops for the local schools. I am a prize-winner in both national and international competitions, including “Young Music Talent” (Sofia), “Svetoslav Obretenov” (Provadia, Bulgaria), 1st prize at the national competition for performance of German and Austrian Music and the 1st prize at the Semmering International Music Summer Academy (Austria). Successful participation in the Obersdorf International Music Festival (Germany), where our string quartet was broadcast on Bavarian radio. I also performed in the Pharos Chamber Music Festival (Cyprus), Prades Festival (France), Open Chamber Music Festival in Prussia Cove (UK), Paxos Chamber Music Festival (Greece) and Lincoln International Chamber Music Festival (UK) among others. I have given concerts in Bulgaria, Germany and UK, both as soloist and chamber musician, including performance of Mozart Sinfonia Concertante with Southbank Sinfonia. Concert performances includes touring extensively in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Finland, Norway, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. I also perform in prestigious UK venues such as Barbican Hall, Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square, Cadogan Hall and LSO St Luke's.
The long experience as a professional orchestra and chamber musician, soloist and educator has greatly enhanced my knowledge about music and the role of the music instruments in different contexts.
