Beginning lessons on the Piano at age 7, Robert went on to write for and perform in a large variety of solo and ensemble roles throughout his youth. Ranging from classical to folk, jazz and rock genres, and performing on piano, cello, double bass, guitar and percussion, through which he gained a broad musical training.

After studying composition at Birmingham Conservatoire under Richard Causton and Edwin Roxburgh, graduating with First-class honours, Robert was offered an entrance scholarship plus support from the RVW Trust to start the MMus composition course at the Royal Academy of Music. At the Royal Academy he studied for two years under Simon Bainbridge (plus tuition from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and others), receiving additional support from the AHRC. On completing his MMus with Distinction Robert was awarded an additional DipRAM, along with the Charles Lucas Memorial Prize for best composition and the Edwin Samuel Dove Prize for special merit during studentship.

Whilst completing an LRAM teaching diploma in his first masters year, he taught a number of pupils attending the 'Junior Academy', teaching theory and composition. He has a number of years experience as a private Piano/Theory/Composition teacher having prepared many students for exams successfully, and has won a variety of awards for his work as a composer, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize.

Robert currently works as a freelance teacher, composer and jazz/folk pianist based near Hereford, teaching a wide range of ages and abilities.
