Notes:

I have 20 years playing and 12 years teaching experience, tutoring mostly 1-to-1, and I have also led workshops in schools and community projects. I have played in many groups over the years and been fortunate to travel around the UK and Europe, India and Cuba to play music. In August 2012 I performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and more recently, backed jazz singer Hailey Tuck on “Later... with Jools Holland”.

Past and current students vary from young children to adults, who may be returning to the guitar after a while or picking it up for the first time.

For learners just starting their journey, we will cover a breadth of subjects including:

- Tune learning
- Scales/knowledge of the fingerboard
- Improvisation
- Chord knowledge and strumming
- Timing & rhythm
- Elements of songwriting and music theory - how and why the music you like works.

A good teacher is there to give a student tools, not for verbatim learning. I consider my teaching to be genre-free; I don't necessarily teach 'rock guitar' or 'country guitar' or 'jazz guitar', but the foundations that I teach can lead to any and all of these things. We will aim to make you a well-rounded player, comfortable and confident with the guitar, regardless of level or playing context.

For the advanced student, we will work towards a more thorough knowledge of the instrument through scales, analysis of your favourite music, and generally more challenging material. I also teach jazz improvisation and improvisation in general to an advanced level. Perhaps you are confused about what to practice, or how to approach learning to improvise, or you might be overwhelmed with instruction books. You you might be a self-taught player and feel you have some grey areas on the fretboard.

Lessons are tailored to the journey that each student is on, beginner or advanced, casual or serious. I usually teach from my home in Haggerston, a very short walk from the overground. I also have a well-appointed and comfortable recording/rehearsal studio in Finsbury Park. So, get in touch if you think we can work together to help you be a better guitarist!
