Notes:

Although learning to spell my name will make you an absolute winner at “Musician Scrabble”, I am known to my students and in musical circles just as “Tolly”.

I teach the saxophone and only the saxophone, an instrument that I have been passionate about playing and teaching for more than 20 years.

I can teach classical and jazz saxophone to absolute beginners and can stretch those with experience to higher grade levels, preparing them either for A Level or BTEC Performance modules and university level playing. I am also especially successful with adult students

Now well known in Oxfordshire and Berkshire and London musical circles, I started studying the saxophone aged just 8 and went on to attend Kherson College of Music, Ukraine in 1986 and graduated in 1990 with a diploma as a Performing Artist and Saxophone tutor. Between 1990 and 1992 , I spent my national service in the Odessa Regional Military Orchestra – where I travelled all over the former Soviet Union. Then I began playing on the Ukraine Jazz scene, this enabled me to travel all around the world playing with top class professionals and at some of the worlds leading jazz venues.

In 2001, I moved to the UK, where I came to the attention of many of the South’s Jazz musicians including the Pendulum Jazz Orchestra, gigs at Brecon Jazz Festival alongside Don Weller, Peter King, Mornington Lockett and many other established artists. In 2010 I released my debut album entitled “Central Line”, a collaboration with some of the UK’s most sought after session musician and now enjoy a busy schedule of performing, tutoring and recording in the South East of England. Recent sessions include work for: Cat Stevens, Defected Records, Soul Purpose and various Independent labels.

It is my strong belief that if you want to play saxophone then you should be learning with someone who plays that instrument at the highest possible level. My aim is for you to get as much pleasure and satisfaction from playing as I do. My student base ranges from children to adults and many of my students have achieved great success in Associated Board Saxophone syllabus and the Trinity Jazz syllabus. I also have former students who have themselves turned professional and are either performing or are employed in jazz and popular music production.

My technique is to build my lessons around the needs of the individual player and their own personal aims and aspirations. Above all else my lessons are enjoyable, they challenge and stretch the individual and I regard motivation very highly and work hard to motivate and encourage and support all of my students at whatever level they are playing.

Here are some quotes from students who have been kind enough to congratulate me on my lessons.

Richard ( Wargrave, adult student )

"I had been playing the saxophone for a few years and it was a delight to discover Tolly as my new music teacher. My lessons are so much more interesting and rewarding than any before and I feel I have made progress far more quickly. Most important of all I get greater pleasure from lessons and playing. There are lots of perfectly good music teachers out there but few as good. Thank you Tolly!"
