Notes:
As a teacher, my aim is to use my experience to help a student find ways of learning and practicing that are effective and fun for them. Personally, it took me a long time to realize that there are different ways of learning music, some of which engaged me better than others. I want to help other people find what works for them, so they can learn more effectively and stay motivated for longer. Below is some more information about my background:
I have taught "keyboard skills" and "harmony & counterpoint" at Cambridge University.
I have taught "musicianship classes" and music theory at the Royal College of Music, Junior Department.
I have taught music theory and music history at Columbia University.
I have taught GCSE, A-level, and IB at Bedford, where I was the Musician in Residence for two years.
I have taught students aged 7 and up.
Instrumentally, today, I am primarily a keyboardist. I grew up as a Classical musician, and was Organ Scholar at Girton College as an undergraduate, but spend more time in more "popular" genres today. I love the challenge of making grooved music work on the solo piano, without a drum-beat, and find great satisfaction in working out fun and effective arrangements of my favourite songs, arrangements that I often sing along to.
Though I focus on the keyboard today, I have a background as a multi-instrumentalist, and had acquired Grade 8 distinction (ABRSM) on the violin and oboe by age 13. Age 27, I took up the Irish fiddle and used to play frequently in sessions in New York City, which were a lot of fun.
As a composer, I work in several genres, and have had my work featured on BBC Radios 3 and 4.
