John Bass was born in Cambridge and started violin lessons at the age of six, before transferring to the viola at the age of ten. Growing up, John was a member of the National Children’s Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra, leading the violas in both.

John continued his musical studies at The Royal Academy of Music, studying with John White, Stephen Shingles and taking part in masterclasses with Emanuel Vardi. He played in several of the college orchestras as principal and co-principal viola. Apart from his orchestral playing, John was also very much involved in chamber music, and was awarded high commendations in a number of chamber music competitions.

Since graduating from the Royal Academy of Music with a Performers Certificate and LRAM, John has been freelancing as a performer, playing with many professional orchestras and chamber groups eg Ulster Orchestra, Milton Keynes City Orchestra, New Queens Hall Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and many more.

Throughout his career he has been invited to perform various concertos with several orchestras in his home town of Cambridge including concertos by Teleman, Stamitz, as well as playing and directing the orchestra in Hindemith’s Trauermusik in a memorial concert.

John also plays in and helps to run Ariella Strings, one of the best professional string groups in the area.

John has worked extensively around the Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire areas for both private schools and for music services. He runs his own successful and highly popular, private teaching practice from home.
