I have 25 years' experience as a working bass player and I am extremely passionate about teaching bass from a bass playerís perspective - bass is not just a big guitar missing some strings! The vast majority of lessons available for bass guitar are taught by musicians who do not play bass as their first instrument and therefore often donít approach the instrument in quite the same way a bassist would.

With the majority of my students I use the Trinity College London Rock & Pop Bass syllabus as a basis for learning. This provides an excellent structure and progression path for the student, gradually building your skills and always using popular songs as the context for new ideas. Many students choose to take grading exams at the end of each stage but this is in no way essential if you prefer not to. For those hoping to ultimately study music in further/higher education grading can be very beneficial.

For intermediate players wanting help with specific areas of your playing the lessons will be tailored to your individual needs. My approach at all levels is to focus in on the essentials needed to become a well rounded bass player; technique, time and groove, fretboard knowledge, harmony and chord theory, transcription, chart reading etc. Put together these allow us to understand and play existing music and just as importantly become able to create our own great basslines. As much as possible we work on these areas in the context of playing real songs; the magic of bass is hearing how it works in conjunction with other instruments to become more than the sum of the parts!

I am based at Rattle & Drum Music in central Derby. This is an excellent location with good transport links, lots of nearby parking and only 2 minutes outside the Intu shopping centre. It is a great facility with 6 one-to-one teaching rooms where hundreds of students visit each week. It is also the Trinity exam centre for Derbyshire and has a great instrument shop underneath it!

Students of all ages and abilities are welcome but children do need to be big enough to comfortably hold the instrument. On average around 8 years old and above is fine but if you have any concerns you are welcome to come and try a bass for size before committing to lessons.

I have a full DBS Enhanced Certificate and £10million Public Liability Insurance.
