Jo Yee is a British pianist and musician based in Manchester. Recently graduated from Cambridge University, Jo Yee has an MMus in piano performance from the RNCM and is currently undertaking a further AdvPGDip at RNCM with a scholarship.
Jo Yee began playing the piano at the age of 6 and whilst attending the Sheffield Music Academy from 2007-2011, took lessons with Valentina Kalashnik (Glier College, Kiev; Sheffield University), as well as participating in masterclasses with Leslie Howard, Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, Tim Horton, Yolande Wrigley, Havilland Wilshire and Ekaterina Murina. In 2008, Jo Yee won the Winifred Liverside Prize and achieved DipABRSM in piano performance in 2009. She was also organ scholar at St Marks, Broomhill from 2009-2011. Since then, solo engagements have included a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto in G major, K453 with the Rococo Chamber Orchestra in May 2012 (which she co-conducts with the cellist, Joe Davies) as well as recitals at Sidney Sussex, Jesus, Clare, Robinson and Newnham colleges in Cambridge, Ely Cathedral, Sheffield Cathedral, Sheffield University, the Crucible Studio, Chethams School of Music and solo performances in Krakow during a concert tour with her chamber group, the 'Robertson Ensemble' in March 2012. An avid chamber musician and accompanist, Jo Yee has also worked as an accompanist for a masterclass at Clare College, Cambridge with the tenor, Roderick Williams, in March 2013, as well as regular collaborations with professional instrumentalists and singers.
During her time at Cambridge, Jo Yee studied piano with Patrick Hemmerlé (Conservatoire Superiore de Paris) and Niel Immelman (Royal College of Music), as well as receiving academic supervision from individuals such as John Rink, Nicholas Marston and Sarah MacDonald. As well as training in traditional academic subjects such as harmony and counterpoint, analysis and advanced music theory, Jo Yee takes a particular academic interest in sociological issues surrounding the reception and consumption of music, writing her final year dissertation on 'The Portrayal of Masculinities in Alban Berg's Wozzeck'.
Jo Yee is an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, with extensive experience as both a piano and academic tutor (both privately and in academies for young musicians) in a variety of age groups.
