Biography

Gemma Lois Summerfield is an English Soprano studying a Masters in Performance at the Royal College of Music under the tutelage of vocal teacher Rosa Mannion and coach Simon Lepper. She has full funding with scholarships and grants provided from awards within the RCM and from Help Musicians UK.

Solo oratorio performances include Fauré’s Messe Basse, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Bach’s Magnificat in D Major and Christmas Cantata. Gemma gained critical acclaim singing the role of Lady Macbeth in the new production 'Okavango Macbeth' for Edinburgh Studio Opera (Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013) and was cast as La Chauve-Souris and Une Pastourelle in Ravel’s ‘L’enfant et les sortilèges’ (Royal College of Music, Autumn 2013). She has also had substantial experience in chorus roles with the RCS and Scottish Opera.

Accolades include The Cuthbert Smith prize (Lies Askonas Competition 2014), The Governors’ Recital Prize for Voice 2013 and The Norma Grieg Prize for French Song 2013, as well as being a finalist in the 2014 Thelma King Award and in the upcoming 38th Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens. Gemma has partaken in masterclasses with Joan Rodgers; Dame Felicity Palmer; Edith Wiens; Susan Bullock; Patricia MacMahon; and renowned accompanists Malcolm Martineau, Roger Vignoles and Anne le Bozec.

Forthcoming performances include First Lady in Mozart's Due Zauberflöte at the RCM, Annina in La Traviata as part of the Rye Festival, and English Song Recitals at The Ashmolean as well as solo and ensemble engagements throughout the UK.
