I offer one to one tuition on violin and piano. I can also offer paired lessons if there were friends wishing to learn together but I personally think that eventually a child will progress further if learning individually.

I have been a primary school teacher since 2007 so I have 13 years of experience working with young children. I have taught classes from Reception to Year 6 and I have also taught specific class music lessons from Reception to Year 8. At my last school, where I was Head of Music as well as a class teacher, I started a string group and taught the violin to 9 children after school. When some of these children left the school they asked if they could continue learning privately with me so this led to me beginning to teach violin, and then the piano, from my home in addition to my day to day school job! I have found that I thoroughly enjoy teaching privately and the progress is so much more visible.

I have been teaching privately for about 2 years now and have recently been taking on more pupils to develop this new part of my career.

Since I am used to working with children, I think I am very patient, very approachable, we can enjoy our lessons together and I am able to find music the children want to play as I understand their interests.

I believe it is important to teach at the individual's own pace. I will prepare and enter children for ABRSM exams but this is not essential if children wish just to learn and play for fun.
I have a 100% pass rate so far and recently had a year 7 child pass her Grade 4 violin with merit and a year 8 child pass her Grade 1 piano with distinction. I will have several children sitting exams in the summer this year. Fingers crossed....

But I teach a wide range of ages from age 5 upwards, I currently teach a couple of 5 year old pianists!

I also teach theory to my pupils as it is important to keep this going in order to unlock the higher grades when the time comes.

I myself have played the violin since I was 5, so nearly 30 years now! Crikey! I have played the piano for about 20 years and have always sung in a choir. My family are all musicians, my father having just retired from the BSO and my mother still teaching the cello in several private schools across Dorset, so it's in the blood! I still sing in a choir and I play in a string quartet for weddings and the odd gig from time to time. At my current school I direct and accompany the school choir, lead a recorder and a string ensemble and tutor the strings in the orchestra, as well as play in and lead assemblies and direct productions.

As I am a primary school teacher during the day, my DBS certificate is up to date, as is all my safeguarding and child protection training as well as First Aid!

I offer a free taster session just to see how you get on. I love teaching beginners so I am very happy with the early stages. I charge £12.50 for a half hour lesson but if a child is younger and wants a 20 minute lesson then this can be arranged. A paired violin lesson would be £10 a half hour per pupil.
