'Ondrej is friendly, accommodating and very knowledgeable. He has a teaching style that is encouraging and supportive, and I am very confident that with his help I will become a better musician' - Tony (student)

'I found Ondrej to be a patient, knowledgeable and friendly teacher. As a complete beginner, I found Ondrej's approach fun and productive. Ondrej adapted the lessons to approach topics that I was struggling with and provided me with a good mix of practical and theory tuition. Ondrej is a really nice guy, I would definitely recommend him to others!' - Harry (student)

I have experience teaching a variety of ages (5-60), and abilities (beginner to advanced) in individual and group lessons. Regarding graded music exams, students have a choice to study with me for graded exams on Trumpet, Piano, and Music theory. Also, I prepare students for Scottish Highers, Advanced Highers, A level and IB exams through one to one or group lessons. During the lessons, I can accompany my students on piano (depending on the music). I also have links with many pianists in Edinburgh who could accompany them in performances and exams.

My broad experience enables me to cater to each student individually. This experience comes from having studied with some of the top players, conductors, composers and musicians in the industry (see Biography). This means I can offer a range of approaches to technique and teaching itself based on the needs of my students.

In my lessons, I make sure there is a good balance between variety and in-depth study. I also take particular care to adapt a lesson to a particular student on a particular day. In general, a part of the lesson will be dedicated to technique and another part to studying and interpreting a work. I encourage students to suggest works they themselves want to study but I do also recommend works. In preparation for Scottish Highers and other school exams, we focus on whatever the student needs help with most, while regularly revisiting other areas.

*For trumpeters* (and brass players): In the first part, there could be breathing exercises, tonguing, slurring etc.; and working on a solo work, an orchestral part or another work in the second part (even playing Star Wars with a CD!).
Extra: There is a possibility to play chamber music with me and/or other students should the students desire. There would be no extra charge for this as they would take place in a lesson. Also, there may be a possibility for the more advanced students to join the Edinburgh University Brass Band where I am Musical Director.

*For pianists*: The lessons put emphasis on improving technique, musicality, expression, sound, performance etiquette and other factors to a good performance. I vary the lessons and choose to focus on a few of those aspects each time so that the student can develop holistically without losing interest. This will also depend on what the aims of the students are and the focus will naturally be different for a student aiming to completed a graded exam and a student who enjoys learning some piano. In a similar fashion, focusing on different repertoire will offer different challenges and we will tackle them appropriately. I offer the possibility of playing duets as I believe ensemble playing is crucial for pianists, who often miss out on the learning opportunities presented to somebody who plays an orchestral instrument. There is also a possibility of giving students the possibility to learn to accompany and play with other students that I teach (based on mutual agreement). I am open to ideas and requests so feel free to ask!

*For conductors*: The first part could involve baton technique, posture, a range of expressions depending on the music etc.; and approaching specific problems in traditional repertoire in the second part or working on music the student wants to study.
Extra: In addition to our lessons, my students can come to my rehearsals to sit there with a score and observe (for FREE). Directly after the rehearsal, they can ask questions with a possibility to further discuss the rehearsal in a lesson. Furthermore, there is a possibility of organising sessions with players so that the student gets to conduct what they prepared in lessons. For further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Availability & Spaces
I am flexible with lesson times and spaces. I don't have a problem travelling even to more distant parts of Edinburgh or outside, however, there may be an additional charge to reflect travel costs and time. Nevertheless, I am very open about discussing options and teaching on weekends is not a problem for me. I can also access rehearsal spaces in central Edinburgh but their availability needs planning in advance.
