ABRSM Grade 5 Euphonium (Distinction)
Instruments: Bass Guitar (all levels)
Music Theory (up to grade 5)
Genre/Style(s): Rock
Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

I am a self taught musician who has been playing bass and writing music for 10 years. I have extensive experience playing bass guitar in a professional setting, and would consider myself fluent in the idiomatic styles of bass playing in:

- Rock/pop
- Funk
- Jazz
- Soul
- Metal
- Progressive
- "Math" / Technical rock/metal

and full knowledge of the following playing techniques:

- Fingerstyle (including rake)
- Plectrum
- Slap
- Tapping (including 8 finger tapping)
- Thumb
- Soundscaping with effects

I have an extensive working knowledge of music theory, both from within the standard ABRSM syllabus (up to grade 5), but also stretching to university level, including but not limited to:

- Romantic harmony
- Jazz harmony
- Atonal & chromatic techniques
- Advanced Voice Leading
- Modal music
- Exotic scales and world music
- Orchestration

My approach to teaching and learning is a hands on approach, based on experience playing appropriate pieces to refine and practice technique, as well as a structured plan to efficiently schedule work on technical exercises.

I find the integration of a working knowledge of music theory is invaluable, no matter which instrument is played, and my instrumental and theory teaching style reflects this.

In my private life I have played within a jazz band, a few rock outfits, and currently play for a progressive band based in York. I have also played drums on occasion, as well as sung in choirs and played guitar for singers needing accompaniment.

I am also in the process of starting my career as a composer, and am available at the present time to write commissioned pieces for free, provided I can use a recording of the piece to contribute towards my portfolio.
