Biography

Jakob Torma, Violin.

Originally from Halmstad in Sweden, Jakob started to play the violin at the age of seven. Studies in Gothenburg followed with Lisbeth Vecchi and Katarina Andreasson. (Leader of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.)
After studies at the Ljungskile School of Music in Sweden, he gained full scholarships for his studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire with Professor Jacqueline Ross and Dr Rimma Sushanksaya (Student of David Oistrakh). He took his Postgraduate Diploma in Peformance with Highest Commendation and won a number of awards and scholarships such as the Sylvia Cleaver Chamber Music Prize and the Birmingham Chamber Music Society Derek Young Memorial Award.
He has performed in Masterclasses for Illya Gringolts, Daniel Hope, Andrew Marwood and Prof Florin Croitoru. Jakob was the leader of all the Conservatoire Orchestras and after auditioning he was also awarded a place at the prestigious City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra training scheme.

Since graduating, Jakob has played with most professional orchestras in the Midlands and has been a member of the New English Concert Orchestra and the Longborough Opera Festival Orchestra since 2007, conducted by Anthony Negus, Gianluca Marciano, Thomas Blunt and Jeremy Silver.
Soloist engagements with orchestra have included performances of Vivaldi's “Four Seasons”, Violin Concertos by Mozart and Mendelssohn, and the Dvorak Violin Concerto with the Eroica Camerata in June 2014.

As a chamber musician, Jakob has performed in many countries in Europe and Asia, with appearances on Swedish and Turkish National Radio and Television, and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for members of their Royal Family. Jakob has also performed recitals on cruises, most recently on a months cruise around the Mediterranean on the luxury ship Saga Pearl 2.

Jakob has very diverse musical interests. He was a member of the folk/ classical trio the Freaky Fiddlers, who were the winners of the 1997 Swedish national music competition “Musik i Direkt”.
They performed at the opening ceremony of the 1997 Jeunessess Musicales World Congress in Rotterdam, with following appearances at festivals in France, Holland and as co-headliners performing in front of 15.000 people in Bucharest, Rumania. Jakob was a guest musician on the recording “Armageddon”, a project by Chris Amott of the Swedish Heavy Metal band Arch Enemy.
