Cambridge University graduate
Instruments: Violin
Genre/Style(s): Classical
Ability Levels: Beginners to Intermediate

At the heart of my teaching is the belief that every person learns in a different way and that my job is to find that way by listening to them, observing them, and talking to them about their specific hopes and challenges. I also encourage them (and show them how) to listen to, observe and question themselves in this regard. I don't just teach violin technique but also have a strong focus on music theory and aural - thus developing a rounded musician, not just a violinist/violist. I believe that this approach stands the students in great stead for everything they do in the future - not just musically but in other walks of life too. For younger students, I will only teach them if they themselves want to learn AND a parent/carer is supportive of this and willing to encourage and help with practice. Practice between lessons is essential for students of all ages.

I am constantly evaluating and developing my teaching techniques, and materials used include everything from violin study books to music and exercises that I write myself, and ipad/tablet apps that help students to practice note/rhythm/symbol recognition and fluency. I keep in touch with others teachers throughout the country to discuss teaching techniques and approaches and to share best practise.

In addition to my teaching I lead music workshops in schools focusing on those in areas of socio-economic deprivation. I am also the Trustee responsible for Artistic Direction of my own music charity that promotes concerts and music education in North Somerset, and I work behind the scenes for the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, which is a Saturday school for the UK's most talented young musicians.
