Biography

Soprano Rachel Abbott is currently studying as an associate student at the RNCM with her teacher Sarah Rhodes. Prior to this she completed a PGDIP AS in vocal performance at the RNCM, a PGCE at Nottingham Trent, a Masterís Degree at Huddersfield University and her undergraduate degree at Sheffield University, with Carol Smith as her teacher. She began singing at an early age, joining Bolsover Church choir age eight and starting signing lessons with Frank Holmes when she was at secondary school.
Rachel has performed numerous solo concerts and performed with choirs regularly. Her performances have included soprano soloist in Haydnís Nelson Mass, Mozartís Requiem and Coronation Mass, Orffís Carmina Burana, Haydnís Creation and Handelís Messiah. She has sung the lead role in My Fair Lady and Plaintiff the Trial by Jury and was soprano soloist for the UK debut of Paul Barkers MASSive in 2014 with Chesterfield Philharmonic choir. She played Praskovia in the RNCM production of The Merry Widow and took the roles of Lady Billows and Elettra in the RNCM opera scenes. In 2015 Rachel performed the role of Madam De La Haltiere in Sheffield City operaís production of Cendrillon. Rachel will be performing as the Nurse Maid and as Shirley Kaplan in the RNCMs production of Street scene in December. In August next year Rachel will take the role of Alice Ford in opera Serias semi-staged production of Verdiís Falstaff.
Rachel has a wide ranging musical background, and plays a number of instruments as well as singing. She was vocalist and saxophonist for the Derby County Jazz Orchestra, and the NEDMC big band. She was the Deputy Musical director of a small drama group and has taught music privately and in the classroom. She has been involved in and has taken workshops in rhythm and singing and samba. In 2012 Rachel won second place in the International Eisteddfod competition, a very proud moment, and a fantastic experience. She also was part of the chorus for Otello and Tosca with Dorset Opera in 2011. Rachel has also been part of several choirs over the years, but now focusses on solo performance.

Last year Rachel received support for her studies from The Derbyshire Community foundation, The Seary Charitable Trust, The Díoly Carte Foundation and The Chesterfield Philharmonic choir.
