When teaching I take inspiration from the teachings of John Holt and Anne Peckham, combining Holt's ethos of embracing student-lead teaching, and Peckham's advanced contemporary singing techniques. My personal perspective on teaching music and singing is that it has the potential to heal emotional trauma. Singing gave me a chance to express things I couldn't say in the spoken word. My teaching is also informed by Jane. W Davidson's research on the effects of group singing on middle-class and marginalised groups. Her research suggests that the categories that often define and divide us (race, social and economic status, age and gender, for example) are irrelevant when it comes to music and the benefits it has on the mind, body and social cohesion. It is for this reason that I believe everyone should have access to music education and the chance to find their own musical voice.
