Biography

Sylvia Yee has taught piano music for over 15 years on three different continents (North America, Asia, and Europe) from beginners to diploma level. During this time, she has worked with pupils from many different cultural backgrounds, and children to adults with skills ranging from novice to very advanced players. Drawing on her varied and rich teaching experience, Sylvia is able to tailor her teaching to each individual's needs, providing both the inspiration, enthusiasm, and discipline needed to excel.

Sylvia holds a Masters degree in Piano Performance from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, UK. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria, where she was a recipient of numerous musical awards, including the Victoria Registered Music Teachers Scholarship, Madeline Till Competition, Horning Memorial, and Fletcher Piano Scholarships. Sylvia has performed in masterclasses with Anton Kuerti, Kevin Fitzgerald, and Ian Fountain and received chamber coaching from members of the Lafayette Quartet, Nicola Eimer, and Erich Gruenberg. She owes a debt of gratitude to her piano teachers the Hamish Milne, Kenneth Broadway, Edward Parker, Ian Parker, and May-Ling Kwok for sharing their creative energy, bountiful knowledge and rich legacies with her.

In her native Vancouver, Sylvia launched the annual CIBC Youth Piano Competition in 2002 and co-chaired the event until 2008. In the summer of 2009, she was selected by the World Appreciation of Music Foundation to be a piano instructor in Bangalore, India to build a stronger foundation of Western Classical music for the students there. After 10 years of teaching in London, Sylvia and her family moved to St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
