I began to play cornet at the age of three before settling on the trombone at nine. After leaving high school I studied trombone under Eric Jennings, the then Principal Trombonist for the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
My passion for jazz led me to study under bass player Stuart Riley and saxophonist Mike Hall.
From the age of 21, I have performed in concerts and festivals throughout England, in Ireland and in Spain, and supported artists such as Jools Holland, The Yardbirds and Girls Aloud.
Whilst at college I was musical director of my own 18 piece big band playing the music of Sammy Nestico and Stan Kenton, and shortly after formed a group called The Funk Junkies, which was a collection of very talented musicians of all ages who met in studios to record funk and disco tracks. The band recorded two albums and performed at the Nantwich Jazz Festival.
For the past sixteen years, as well as being a successful performer, I have worked as a peripatetic teacher of brass, keyboard and theory, a classroom teacher and have had many private students.
I have a diploma in jazz theory, composition and performance. I also have Grade 8 trombone and an ATCL diploma in trombone performance. I have a degree in music and a PGCE in Secondary Music.
As a teacher, I have taught all Key Stages as well as adult learning.
I can teach to all examination board specifications using practical, theory and technology based learning. I use both Sibelius and Cubase.
