I am a trained trumpet and piano player with extensive experience of playing in orchestra, ensembles, and giving solo performances both at school and at University. I achieved my grade 8 trumpet and grade 7 piano in 2013 in my last year at secondary school in England. During this time I was the lead trumpet player in the Thames Vale Youth Orchestra and also performed with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra tackling challenging repertoire. I also played first trumpet in a quartet which went on to be Champions in the Pro Corda National chamber music competition.
During my last two years at school I set up and conducted a trumpet quintet for the younger years (11-13 years old) involving once weekly rehearsals and encouraging them to perform in small school tea concerts and develop their confidene playing as a group. I really enjoyed watching them grow in skills and confidence and working with these young musicians was a lot of fun. Since starting University 6 years ago I have represented the University in concerts in Belfast, Brussels and Dublin, and have been attending regular weekly rehearsals for both classical and jazz orchestras. This has included playing in high profile concerts for up to 750 people.
Given this experience, I am a confident performer, but the journey has not been easy and I have had to learn how to deal with performance nerves and audition anxiety - skills I am happy to pass on to my pupils. My approach to teaching is relaxed and fun as I believe that this is how learning is best fostered. I am very patient with pupils and I believe that learning to play an instrument should be as much about buildng confidence and having fun as gaining skills, and certainly not all about passing exams. Although, if pupils are keen to progress through ABRSM or other exam boards I will happily assist with this process.

Trumpet lesson structure: I will begin with a short warm-up session including working on some scales, breathing, and tounging and slurring exercises. I will then work on one (or two - depending on the pupil's preference) pieces, looking at passages which the pupil is struggling with and breaking these down into simpler sections to help them to flow into the piece as a whole. For pupils wanting to work towards exams I will work on sight-reading technique with them showing them skills in how to approach a sight-reading and make best use of the assigned time. I think this can be one of the most difficult parts of the exam so it's important to keep practising and developing skills and confidence!

I am happy to travel to your residence for lessons and I am happy to teach beginners (especially children) in trumpet, as well as people of any age with early experience or those wanting to improve.
