Rock musician for 10+ years, teaching piano, guitar and drums - as well as composition, recording and theory. Lots of experience in:
After years of piano lessons in my youth, I discovered the electric guitar and realised that music can be more than just working through grade books. I discovered that, living in a very small village, I had nobody to play with, so I learned to accompany myself on drums, bass and vocals, and released my first solo EP at 17.
On completing music A-level, I moved to London for a year to study drum performance at BIMM, while playing both drums and keyboards for several different projects, as well as cutting my teeth with film scoring. With this experience in tow, I then moved to Nottingham to study music full-time at The University of Nottingham, with a particular focus on game music implementation.
During this period, I played with 20 different projects at over 60 concerts, released 8 records (and recorded a few more unreleased projects!) and scored 2 game projects.
I began teaching drums, guitar, composition, and recording engineering in 2014, and found teaching to be as exciting and challenging as performing or recording!
I have a lot of experience teaching young beginners, but especially enjoy teaching adult learners. I've taught a mix of newbies, returning players, and experienced advanced musicians looking to reach the next level.
I take a problem-solving approach to music, so that students steadily improve with lessons, and are comfortable approaching new techniques and styles. For playing, composing and performing I give my students positive, can-do mindset, fostering the skills to enable independence as musicians. I don't just teach: I use my experience to teach students to teach themselves!
My students find themselves challenged, but comfortable, with a strong understanding of the technical skills and theory to progress independently, so that it doesn't all just slip away once the lesson is over!
A lot of students enjoy the structure of grade exams, so I am happy to teach the Rock School and Trinity grade series.
I typically teach hour lessons, but younger students and teens may prefer half-hour lessons - unless they're particularly enthusiastic! I am also able to offer remote lessons via Skype for distant learners!
