Biography

Joel Godfrey is a trombonist who has recently graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a 2:1 degree. Joel started playing the trombone from the age of 12 where he joined his local music centre in East Barnet. At 16 Joel began studying music at the Guildhall School’s junior department before accepting a scholarship for undergraduate study at the Royal Northern College of Music. In his 3rd year he studied abroad under the Erasmus scheme at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig under Thomas Leyendecker.

At the RNCM Joel was selected through audition, to play in master classes to Zoltan Kiss, Christian Lindberg, and jazz musicians Dennis Rollins and Jiggs Whigham.

Joel was part of the RNCM trombone ensemble who won the International Trombone Association Emory Remington competition. The prize was to perform at the 2016 International Trombone Festival at the Juilliard School.

Joel has experienced playing classical music and jazz in a variety of venues and countries including Lucca in Tuscany, the Royal Albert Hall, St John's Smith Square, Manchester and Malta Jazz Festivals and the Juilliard School.

Joel has studied trombone with Simon Cowen, Jiggs Whigham, Thomas Leyendecker, Roger Cutts and Katy Jones.
