Notes:

Iím looking to take on enthusiastic students in electric guitar, electric bass, composition or theory.

Iím 29 years old and hold a doctorate from Christ Church, University of Oxford having also studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the University of Salford. I teach primarily composition and music analysis for a number of Oxford colleges alongside working as a composer/arranger for pop bands and orchestras. I have had guitar students since leaving school some ten years ago and have been teaching composition at Oxford since 2014. Now settled permanently in Oxford, Iím keen to expand my private teaching.

Iím happy to tailor lessons to the studentís requirement, whether theyíre looking to take exams or not, but like to teach through the Rock School or Trinity Guildhall syllabus for guitar and bass and the ABRSM course for theory, generally just up to grade 5 in the latter. If students want to do classical guitar, which I'm happy to do until grade 5-6, then we can use either the ABRSM or Trinity course.

For guitar and bass, I teach all kinds of pop/rock, blues, and jazz, and can teach fingerstyle guitar technique also. Having students find their own musical voice is important to me whilst at the same time having them well-versed in the theory around what they are doing, whether that be in pop, jazz or classical music. I aim to have students develop essential listening skills, playing by ear and improvising in pop and jazz styles too. I am happy to work on sight-reading (for pop & jazz Ďsessioní situations too) and classical playing if students are keen to develop that side of their playing. Another key facet is that I aim for students to be practical musicians that donít see performance and theory separate entities

For composition teaching, Iím led more by the studentís needs. I teach through a mix of working with student compositions, to more specific technical exercises, to analysis of music from the Baroque through 20th and 21st century music. I can instruct students in all manner of historical orchestration techniques and instrumentation to contemporary pop arranging. For those composing on a computer, I use Sibelius software. (Please see my biography on the following page for details of orchestra and ensembles I have worked with.)

Being a composer and arranger for pop bands too, I can offer instruction in songwriting too.

Fully DBS checked, Iím happy to take on pupils from age about 13 and above. Iíve lots of experience teaching adults of all levels too so whether youíre looking to get out of rut in your playing, pick an instrument back up or try something youíve always wanted to do, weíll be ideally set.

I generally teach from home in East Oxford, just by St. Clementís roundabout and my rate is £35 per hour of tuition. Travel expenses added, I may be able to travel within the Central Oxford area too.
