Grade 8 Drum Kit (Trinity) with Distinction

Genre/Style(s): Rock

When I was 10 my Mum brought me a snare drum for Christmas. My Clarinet teacher had suggested to her that it would help improve my rhythm. It did, but I quickly lost interest in the Clarinet. I liked stuff you could hit!
The next Christmas I got a drumkit (best Christmas EVER), and I was away. I joined my 1st band aged 13 and have been playing ever since.
After passing O Level & A Level music, and Grade 8 Drums with Honours, I headed up to Leeds where they had a course in Jazz & Contemporary Music where I broadened my knowledge of musical styles playing in Big Bands, Jazz quartets and accompanying vocalists (lots of brush work).
After that I moved back to Bournemouth and started a band called The Crazy Gods of Endless Noise. We recorded a couple of Albums, and toured the country and Europe with the likes of Prodigy and Feeder.
Around this time I also started to teach at private schools; Clayesmore nr Blandford and St.Swithun's Girls School in Winchester. I found that I really enjoyed the experience. It's very fullfilling seeing a pupil gain a new skill, and their satisfaction at mastering a new beat or fill.
I lived and played in London for a good chunk of the 90's. Then in 2000 I started working for the Dorset Music Service, teaching in schools all over the county, from primary school kids right up to 18 year olds. I think I must have taught well over 1000 pupils by now, but I'm often frustrated by group school lessons. You just can't go into the kind of detail and spend the time that each child needs to really progress as they should. For any serious Drummer, private lessons has to be the way to go.
I offer lessons that can be adapted to each individual student. You want to do Grades? I have a 100% pass rate and have been doing them for over 20 years. I can teach the Rockschool or the Trinity syllabus. Or maybe you just want to learn to play for fun. I'll get you playing along to your favorite music using headphone amps. I also like to bring along a guitar so we can play together, giving you a bit of a Band experience. I'll teach you the right technique, it makes a big difference to the sound you'll make.
You'll learn about the way music works; phrasing, understanding musical structure, playing like a musician rather than just beating up the drums (although this is sometimes fun too). I think it's important for a drummer to have an overall knowledge of music. It'll mean that you wont just be the person at the back of the room waiting for the musicians to tell you what to do.  I'll help you to play, read & write music, how to think about beats, how to co-ordinate your body to achieve complex rhythms. If you think about what drumming actually is. Its your body muti-tasking at an advanced level. In many beats each limb of your body is doing it's own individual job. Your brain is making connections the average person never has to.
