Ms Kirsten Mackay

Qualifications:
My degree is in music, a BMus(hons) from Trinity College of Music in London, and I graduated in 2000.
(my principal instrument was viola)

I have a clear, recent, DBS certificate.

I'm a member of the European String Teachers' Association (ESTA).
Instruments: Violin
Viola
Recorder
Genre/Style(s): I'm classically trained, so I teach in the classical tradition, but I think having a balanced diet of music is important, and if a pupil has something they really want to play, I'm happy to help them. I want instrumental learning to be positive and fun, not a chore, and I use a variety of approaches to make lessons engaging.

I am willing to do some grade exams with pupils, but would prefer not to do every single grade along the way - everyone is an individual and only working towards grade exams often means we canít pursue other avenues of progress or a variety of repertoire. If your goal is solely to collect grade exams I might not be the right teacher for you.

I have experience of online teaching via Zoom as well as face-to-face lessons.
Ability Levels: Beginners to Advanced

Notes:

I enjoy teaching, and I am committed to helping pupils of all levels to enjoy achieving their musical and personal potential.

I have taught in schools from pre-schools to secondary, individuals and small groups, and am currently doing supply instrumental teaching for the local Music Service in schools around the borough, as well teaching private pupils at my home.

If a pupil wishes to enter for graded music exams, we can do that, or we can work without exams. I will support and assist students preparing for school exams (for example GCSEs, A-Levels or scholarships) in every way I can, and if there are particular goals or aspirations you have, I will do my best to help you achieve them.

I've taught all ages of people; toddlers, primary and secondary school aged children, and adults, and I am happy to work with anyone. If you are considering lessons for a child or teenager with any sort of special requirements, I'd be delighted to work together with them and you to see how we can best make learning an instrument a positive experience for all of us.

If you are considering me as a teacher, we can arrange a sample lesson at reduced cost to give you a chance to see if we work well together. If this lesson is for a child, by all means do sit in and watch.
You may also sit in for your child's regular lessons if you want to.
