Notes:
I have been teaching ABRSM Music Theory to Grade 5, part time, for over 10 years (whilst working in a Primary school supporting music). I have been offering 1-to-1 lessons to pupils who have contacted me as a result of recommendations from local peripatetic teachers and parents of previous pupils. I have taught children from Year 4 up to Year 13, including some with specific learning difficulties. I have taught pupils who play a range of instruments and have learned over the years how a pupil's instrument can impact on how they approach music theory. I have a current first-time pass rate of over 96%!
I don't normally follow the traditional 'working through the ABRSM books' but have developed my own notes and resources which largely focuses on teaching the material in topics rather than breaking the information up arbitrarily into the grades (although I can prepare for intermediate grades if required). The main focus is on passing the Grade 5 theory exam (required for ABRSM grades 6 and above) but I aim to improve general music understanding and musicianship and instill a love of theory if at all possible at the same time! Although the curriculum is fixed, I always aim to tailor the speed and teaching methods/approach to the individual pupil, adapting to their natural learning style.
