I have been playing drums for 14 years and teaching seriously for 2 years. In my lessons, I draw upon my stylistically broad and technically developed drum set playing to provide a complete education on the drum kit. I follow the trinity Classic drum syllabus as opposed to the rock and pop syllabus. I find this syllabus to be an excellent base upon which to develop stylistic sophistication, variety and techical proficiency and control.

Each lesson will normally consist of technical and reading exercises along with a play-along segment (not necessarily in that order). In addition I very often duet with students in my studio at Holmes music Swindon where there are two drum kits.

My main goal as a teacher is to excite and challenge my students to develop as drummers. My syllabus is designed to equip students with a strong vocabulary in the techniques required of the contemporary drum set player, so that they may pursue their own musical interests with confidence and precision. I also firmly believe that every player should be versed in all the main contemporary styles. My syllabus includes but is not limited to: reading; contemporary grooves; snare drum technique; odd times; Jazz syncopation; drum set maintenance and tuning.

Over the past 4 years I have developed broad and professional capability as a teacher of drums, maths and physics. During 2012/2013 I taught high school science and have subsequently developed a successful peripatetic tutoring business specialising in maths and physics in the Stroud area. My central philosophy as a teacher is to excite, challenge and develop confidence. Check out my website styxinthepocket.com for more detail on my teaching and playing (including videos and recordings).

In terms of resources, I use many of my own exercises but in terms of published resources, I draw heavily from the following:

Trinity (classic) Drum Set grade books (introductory - 8)
Ted Reed Syncopation
Vic Firth snare drum method beginner and intermediate

Aside from schools, I currently offer lessons at Holmes music Swindon and at homes in the Stroud area.
