John started playing drums in the North East of England at the age of 13. Having been taught to read drum music as well as play, John joined the Brass Band scene at the age of 15 and rapidly rose up the leagues to play for a 'Championship Section' band. This proved to be a springboard to becoming a professional musician as John joined the Army as a musician when he was 18. John was taught orchestral percussion and drum kit by John Cave (London Symphony Orchestra) at the famous Kneller Hall school of music and played many concerts Worldwide as a member of 4 Army bands, including the Irish Guards and Scots Guards bands in London. During this time john was asked to teach a friend's child and john's passion for teaching was born. After leaving the Army, John embarked on a UK tour as drummer in The Jay Scott Project, opening for Take That on their Beautiful World tour.

John has played on numerous recording as a session player.

In 2008 John joined Richmond Music Trust as a Drums and Percussion teacher, teaching over 40 pupils and spent 8 very happy years there and still works as an instructor/mentor on the BandIT ‘rock band’ courses for children and also on the BandIT songwriting courses held over the school holidays.

John has been appointed as Drums and Percussion teacher to the following schools:

Hinchley Wood School, Esher.
Dunottar School, Reigate.
Copthorne Prep School, Crawley.

John is still very active as a professional performer and this keeps his skills up to date and his musical awareness sharp. This is very important as a teacher.

John is available to teach in your home.
