I love to teach music and to inspire a love of music in my students, while helping them to gain a deeper understanding and therefore a greater appreciation for it. Lessons will begin with warm-ups in the form of scales and arpeggios. This helps the student to physically warm up and to start thinking about technical aspects of playing or singing. All aspects of the lesson, including the warm-up, will be tailored to the individual.

After a warm-up we will have some technical exercises. These will be related to the repertoire that we will cover in the lesson. These lessons will include aural training as well, as this is important for any musician.

While focussing on the repertoire in the lesson, we will discuss the musical aspects of the piece and while concentrating on getting the notes in the right order and at the right time, we will also think about what the piece means and the message we are trying to communicate to the listeners.

The end of a lesson will include a goal for the next time and a summary of what we have covered so far.

I like to keep a note of the repertoire, technical excercises and individual goals for each student to help us to focus on the appropriate short-term goals which will enable us to achieve the long-term goal the student is aiming for. This could be a graded ABRSM exam, an audition for a choir or orchestra, or learning a piece for the joy of it. Keeping a record of this is also important for monitoring progress, which is essential for motivation and morale.
