Biography

Clíona Ní Choileáin is an Irish cellist and student at the Royal Academy of Music with Felix Schmidt. Clíona is an honours graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, where she studied with Emma Ferrand.
Clíona begand her studies in Cork at the age of 4, and has performed as a cellist in a solo capacity around the UK, Ireland and in Europe as part of festivals and courses. She has received masterclasses from cellists such as Pieter Wispelwey, Ralph Kirschbaum, Christoph Richter and Stephen Doane among others.
Cliona is also very passionate about chamber music, She is a current member of the Academy Cello Ensemble and the Rickard Piano Trio. She has performed at the internationally acclaimed Bantry Chamber Music Festival twice in 2007 and 2011. She performed at their partner festival the Bantry Literary Festival in 2011, for a live radio show. In early 2015 she had the joy of playing with the Elm Quartet at The Wigmore Hall, for a study day of the composer Edwin Roxburgh of which the composer said “The virtuosity was one thing, but the artistry which you brought to the piece was stunning”. She was a finalist in the RNCM Nossek Prize with the Foray Piano Trio in 2015.
Clíona enjoys playing with many different ensembles including pop band Nicholas, and with digital music producer Slime with whom she recorded for BBC radio 6 in 2015. Clíona is also interested in community outreach, she has previously organised music workshops for people suffering from dementia. She is currently undertaking projects with the Royal Academy’s outreach department.
