Mr Philip Underwood

Philip Underwood was born in Chester in 1957 and began his musical studies with R.A. Sutton, whilst a pupil at the King's School. In 1976, he became a student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where his organ teachers included Ronald Frost and Gillian Weir. Whilst at the college, he gained the diplomas of FRCO, ARCM and GRNCM.

In 1991, Philip gained the degree of Master of Music at Liverpool University, following research into the History, Technique and Repertoire of the Organ from 1450. During this period, his organ teachers were Jennifer Bate and Terence Duffy. His finals culminated in a public recital at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

Philip's early career was spent in education, firstly as Organist and Choirmaster of Solihull School and subsequently as Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Worksop College. In September 1987, Philip embarked on a new career as a performer and private teacher. His private teaching encompasses tuition for piano, jazz piano, organ, theory, composition, electronic keyboard and coaching for music examinations at GCSE, A Level and Degree level.

From 1988 to 1997 he was Director of Music at Christ Church West Didsbury in Manchester. During this period he established an annual recital series including lecture/recital "Experiences" devoted to Bach, Franck and Mozart. From 1991 - 1996 he was also part-time Head of Music at De La Salle Sixth Form College in Salford. It was during this period that his interest in composition began, thanks in part to access to modern music technology, with a work written for performance in the Cathedral of St Pol de Leon in Brittany. Since then, the majority of his compositions have been inspired by a particular venue. Some of Philip’s organ compositions are published by Animus Music Publishing and Fagus His Sonata for Organ was reviewed in the Organists’ Review and described as "A substantial work of high quality" (Organists' Review, November 2003)

In November 2000, Philip became Organist and Director of Music at St.John the Divine, Brooklands, Sale. During the last ten years, Philip has performed extensively throughout Britain and abroad. Notable venues have included Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, Chester Cathedral and Coventry Cathedral. Philip was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2006. In 2007 he participated in the Second Annual Festival of New Organ Music in London and he was awarded a composition prize in the 2008 Alienor Harpsichord Competition.
