Biography

I have been a professional musician for 30 years and more, in many guises. I have played with orchestras, string ensembles, viol consorts, Baroque groups, folk groups, ceilidh bands, Americana bands, singer/songwriter duos, bluegrass bands and rock bands.

I have now been teaching music for 9 years, after having been invited to teach double bass at Sore Fingers Summer Schools (www.sorefingers.co.uk) in 2008. Sore Fingers invited me back in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016.

I teach strings at Linton Village College, Walden School, Saffron Walden, and at three primary schools.

My students regularly achieve success at exams, from Prep Test to Grade 8, although my teaching is focused on the enjoyment of playing music and the sense of fulfilment one gets by progressing on a musical instrument.
I also coach students on music theory (up to Grade 8) and aural skills, and some of my violin/fiddle students elect to learn folk music and bluegrass techniques.
I teach all ages, from 6 years old to retirees.
In addition to violin, viola and double bass, one of the most popular instruments that I teach is ukulele. For this I devise all my own arrangements of a wide variety of songs, from the swing era of the 1930s to current hits. I currently teach residential courses in ukulele at the Womens’ Institute's Denman College in Oxfordshire.
